Community Baby Shower Coming Up

By ,

Want to spend a fun couple of hours getting information about raising healthy, happy kids? The 3rd Annual Community Baby Shower is just around the corner, and it’s not just about babies. Sponsored by the Southern Humboldt Family Resource Center, a program of SHCHD, this free event focuses on expectant and new parents, but it’s a gathering for family members and friends of all ages, from babies to grandparents. Come meet the Southern Humboldt Family Resource Center staff including its Coordinator Amy Terrones, and find out what the FRC can offer to you and your family.

We will have nutritionists, lactation consultants, car seat installers, oil reps, infant massage, midwives and doulas here to answer any questions and describe their services. Learn about infant and toddler playgroups, tutoring for students, Youth Alive! activities for teens, and mental health services for all ages.

Southern Humboldt Community Clinic is here to provide the medical services your child needs, and all of our Clinic medical providers are mothers themselves.

Or just come for the fun! We’ll have tons of raffles, games, and giveaways from local businesses! Everyone will go home with something!

Another key annual event

Well Child Exams provide a firm foundation for raising healthy children by identifying problems early on, when they can often be easily corrected. While well babies should be seen by a practitioner every couple of months at first, from three years of age up to 21 years old, once a year is sufficient for most healthy children.

At these visits your child will receive a standard physical exam, and you’ll learn how your child is growing and developing compared to normal developmental milestones. Your provider will also talk about with you about issues such as dealing with recommended vaccinations, family relationships, coping with school challenges, and accessing community services that may help your child flourish.

Pediatric services at SHCHD

Southern Humboldt Community Clinic is here to provide the medical services your child needs, and all of our Clinic medical providers are mothers themselves. Clinic Medical Director Dr. Mylene Rucker has decades of experience treating children, as do Family Nurse Practitioner Barbara Hayes and Physician Assistant Linda Candiotti. Says Linda, who has been involved in SoHum healthcare for over 35 years and has been caring for patients here in our Clinic for over 20 years, “I establish a relationship with people, and I take care of them. One thing I love about treating children is watching my patients grow up.”

The newest member of our certified clinic provider team is Sarah Beach. Now a Family Nurse Practitioner, she is equipped with the latest information in pediatric standards of care. Sarah has treated patients at our District since she joined our staff as an ER nurse in 2006. A long-time resident of Southern Humboldt, Sarah enjoys giving patients the comfort of being treated by someone who understands our community, and she likes helping them to be at ease in uncomfortable situations.

Rounding out our medical team for those occasions when children need x-rays or lab work are Radiology Tech Lora Simone, known for her warm and gentle demeanor with all patients, and our very kind and caring Lab Tech (and dad) Todd Gregory.

When does my child need a clinic visit?

The bottom line is if you feel your kid needs to go to the clinic, trust your instinct, and remember that the younger the child, the quicker a problem can become serious enough to require medical attention.
